This artist turns her vitiligo spots into a work of art

Her name is Amara Aleman, Amara ArtSpots on the networks and she created the “art spots”. She outlines and decorates her vitiligo spots, turning her body into a beautiful work of art.

A little-known disease

“When people see that, they immediately ask themselves, What’s wrong with her? What is it?’”, explains Amara to our colleagues from Brut America. For those who don’t know, vitiligo is an autoimmune disease that affects skin pigmentation. “Basically, my body sees my skin as an enemy and attacks it.” Consequence: the skin of the person who suffers from it becomes depigmented in certain places.

Make your difference a strength

“I was diagnosed over five years ago,” Amara explains. “I was dancing and I was going to make it my job. It was my dream”. She was working at the time for Disney and had to embody a character who did not have vitiligo. “I had to look like him and it was impossible,” says the artist. “I have therefore decided to resign”.

It was then that she installed Tik Tok and discovered that we can accept her difference and put it forward. “I saw all these people who put forward their differences and I thought it was cool”. She then decides to post a first video. “I made a simple green outline and posted it. And it worked really well.”

The art of self-acceptance and self-love

Today, Amara is followed by more than 200,000 people on Tik Tok. She regularly shares her looks and art. “I take colors that go with my outfit,” she says. “I do it every day when I go out. It’s like getting dressed.”

Because this art allowed her to change the perception she had of herself. Today she no longer hides her depigmentation and even highlights it. “It’s my therapy, my meditation,” explains the young woman. “It helps me focus and slow down. It allowed me to accept myself and to love myself”. And she invites everyone to do the same.

A great lesson!
