There is a company in Japan that is developing an app for smartphones that will automatically remove photos of naked children from your phones. And it aims to prevent the sexual exploitation of children and minors.
It is currently in beta testing and was developed in collaboration between Smartbooks Inc. and Fujita Health University in Aichi Prefecture. And thanks to the local Nakamura station in Nagoya prefecture.
Nakamura Security Division Deputy Director Nobuhiro Suzuki commented, “The relationship between children and social media is extremely intertwined. We want to use this app to prevent sexual abuse.”
Some details about this app that prevents kids from sharing nude photos
The app doesn’t have a name yet, but it’s called “Kodomamo”. Name that is a combination of the words “child” and “protect” in Japanese. In addition, it stands out for using AI technology to detect nude photos.
This app that can prevent kids from sharing nude photos is said to work like this:
- After downloading to the phone, “Kodomamo” scans each photo for nudity and also detects photos of naked abdomen, chest and genitalia.
- If an image of nudity is found, it will be removed and an alert message will be sent to the child’s parents to notify them of the image.
- Another feature is also in development, one that will require parental permission to remove the app.
Smartbooks co-founder Naoto Tomita told Vice that he hopes to prevent minors from sending compromising images: “Parents have told us that they are reluctant to buy smartphones for their children. Because of the crimes they can be vulnerable to online, they want these apps as soon as possible.”
Despite the usefulness of this app, there is still one problem taxpayers have to deal with and that is encouraging people to download the app. They had various ideas, from student download discounts to trying to pre-install the app on phones.
Tomita said his goal is for all children to download the app to protect themselves. The app is scheduled to be released in late 2022.
