From now on, to receive an organ transplant in this hospital, it will be necessary to be vaccinated, reports the Washington Post. This hospital, UCHealth, Colorado, recently sent a letter to a patient advising him that if he did not get the vaccine he would be taken off the organ transplant waiting list. And time is running out, since he has only thirty days “to find a vaccination solution”. This letter, it is the elected Republican, Tim Geithner, who unveiled it. He was angry with a decision he considers “disgusting and discriminatory”.
Even if he did not quote the person concerned, the patient in question confirmed to another media that it was indeed her. She regrets having to make a decision, “with which she is not comfortable, only to live”. While the hospital refused to react on a case-by-case basis, it confirmed the information, assuring that other transplant centers in the country had the same rules.

Catching the Covid for a transplant recipient is much more deadly
According to a spokesperson for the hospital who justifies the measure, “doctors must take into account the short and long term risks to the health of patients when considering recommending an organ transplant.” Above all, according to the Washington Post, the strict conditions for accessing a transplant are not new in the country. Generally, other vaccinations are requested, it is necessary to stop smoking, drink alcohol or prove that they will be treated well after the operation in order to avoid possible rejections.
In the United States, more than 100,000 people are waiting for a transplant each year, and in 2020, for example, only a quarter of them received one. In the case of this woman who does not want to be vaccinated for religious reasons, no way out seems possible. According to our American colleagues, she would seek with her donor another hospital outside Colorado, her transplant being necessary for her survival. Recent studies have just shown that Covid-19 had devastating effects on transplant recipients, since the deaths of infected people are 20 to 30% higher.
