This airline fires all cabin crew and replaces them with pilots

The airline Icelandair has decided to terminate the contracts of all its flight attendants and its stewards. The pilots will replace them in the coming weeks.

Icelandair has announced this week that it will lay off all cabin crew and that flight attendants and other stewards will be replaced by pilots. A decision made while the Icelandic national airline has been negotiating with the Icelandic Cabin Crew Association for months, details The Independant. Last June, the two sides had managed to reach an agreement for the next five years which implied an “increase in productivity and flexibility” of the personnel, affirms Icelandair. The carrier had already concluded similar agreements with the unions of pilots and engineers. But ten days ago, during a consultation, cabin crew refused to comply with such an agreement.

Faced with this situation, Icelandair explained that it was renouncing an “amicable conclusion” and decided to “put an end to the employment of its current cabin crew members and to end the working relationship between the parts”. The airline said it was “exploring other options regarding safety and service on board its planes.”
