Basically the human eye is not meant to stare at the screen for a long time. Thus, long hours in front of the computer or cell phone can cause eye damage. For children who are already wearing glasses, it can even increase the intensity of their lens levels.
Ophthalmologist Dr Sekar Ayu Sitoresmi, SpM, M.Ked, Klin said that online schools are the only choice during this pandemic. According to Dr. Sekar, schools in Indonesia have implemented fairly good rules regarding online schools. Usually when the school is online, the school divides it into two sessions. Each session is 4 hours long. And between the two sessions there is also a break.
To keep your child’s eyes healthy, you should follow the 20-20-20 rule, which is, every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. To do that rule, parents can use a timer or alarm to remind children.
“Try every 20 minutes for the child to turn his eyes away from the computer screen. If it is not possible to ask the child to just close his eyes for 20 seconds. Just stared at the computer screen again, “said Dr. Sekar.
To reduce exposure to light from devices, Dr. Sekar suggested that parents pay attention to the brightness of the device screen when children learn. Also adjust the sitting position of the children. Next, position the screen parallel to or slightly lower than the eye. When using a smartphone, avoid placing the smartphone too under the eye. Because this will result in tired eyes.

Try to learn online when children have a special room. Where children can position their bodies and ergonomic devices and make them comfortable. Indeed, compared to using a smartphone that is small in size, it would be nice if the child uses a laptop when studying online. A bigger screen will be better for a child’s eyes.
To keep your eyes fresh and avoid fatigue, dr. Sekar also suggested that occasionally invite your little one to play outside. “Inviting children to play outside such as fields or parks is very good to keep their eyes fresh,” added Dr Sekar. Outdoor activities are good for physical health as well as for children’s eyes. Parents should ensure that their children spend enough time in the sun.
