With Jonas Clementi, Obermais’ most accurate striker of the first half of the season has renounced the league restart. It sounds strange that an 18-year-old full-back is following in his footsteps, but it is true. Edoardo Ghiotti is the name of the young man who plows the left wing of the blue and white surprise club in the five-man chain and is the top scorer of his team with four goals so far.
Ghiotti struck again on Wednesday in the 3-1 win over Stegen. On the left side he went into a one-on-one duel, pulled in and maneuvered the ball with his (actually weaker) right foot by flicking into the far corner. It was the 1-0 and the can opener for the Obermaiser victory, thanks to which the Merans can still dream of promotion – and that, although with Jonas Clementi, Cristian Parise, Fabian Tratter, Lukas Obkircher, Bernardo Ceravolo (they have to restart waived) and finally Claus Drescher (injured) numerous supports are missing.
An unfamiliar position
“We have a great group,” says Edoardo Ghiotti. “Nobody puts any pressure on us, we can play freely. That’s why, in my opinion, we managed to win so many games. ”Does that also apply to his own strong form? “I play carefree and always try to get the best out of myself,” says the high school student, who will only celebrate his 19th birthday in December.

Ghiotti is playing his first season in a fighting team this year. “Before that, I was part of the Berretti team at FC Südtirol for a year, and I grew up at Olimpia Meran,” explains the left-footed man, who is actually not a full-back. “In my youth I always played in the storm, recently a lot in midfield or as a playmaker. It was Luca Lomi who put me on this wing position. But I like it very much. ”In any case, his goal instinct is no coincidence. “In the past, when I was young, I always scored a lot of goals,” says Ghiotti with a smile.
Gosens admirer and Genoa fan
With his hits, the 18-year-old left-footer has already given Obermaisern a few points, for example against Gardolo (goal to 2-1 final score) or St. Georgen (decisive 1-0 from free kick). Ghiotti also appeared several times as a template provider.

“My idol,” explains the young Meran, “is Lionel Messi. I really like Robin Gosens in the position I’m playing in. He puts a lot of pressure on his side and scores goals. ”But his heart beats neither for Barcelona nor for Atalanta:“ I’m a Genoa fan. Some of my relatives come from there, my father and my uncle have always been fans of this club and that’s why I am. “
For Obermais there are now two decisive games. On Sunday it is against St. Georgen, which has no chance of promotion since Wednesday. And a week later there is a duel with front runner Levico, which could possibly become the ultimate promotion decision. At the moment the Meraner are only two points behind the kickers from the health resort in Trentino. That doesn’t make Ghiotti nervous. “We don’t have to prove anything to anyone, we can play freely – just like we’ve always done so far.” The dream of Serie D is still alive.
