Smoke that quickly reaches the floors and common areas creating a movement of panic among residents. The tragedy was narrowly avoided on Tuesday March 29, 2022, following a fire that broke out in a tower in the district of Flanades to teal (Val-d’Oise).
Rubbish ignites on the landing, 91 firefighters mobilized
It was 10:45 p.m. when the fire department was alerted. According to the first elements of the police investigation, rubbish which was on the landing of the 3rd floor ignited. The flames reached the common areas up to the 6th floor, the smoke spreading to the entire tower.
Significant resources were immediately mobilized by the firefighters. In total, 28 machines and 91 firefighters intervened for 6 hours. The latter came to the end of the disaster using two lances, preventing the flames from spreading to the apartments. Only the common areas and the stairwell have been damaged.
A victim in absolute emergency
At the same time, the 140 inhabitants of the tower were evacuated and taken care of by the emergency services. Severely intoxicated by the fumes, a man was hospitalized in absolute emergency by the Smur. More slightly injured, 31 residents, including three children, were hospitalized in relative emergency and transported to the hospitals of Gonesse, Eaubonne, Argenteuil and Saint-Denis (Seine-Saint-Denis).
The other evacuated tenants were taken care of by the Red Cross at the reception center set up in a nearby gymnasium. Several residents had to be relocated
Criminal act or accidental fire? In the aftermath of the disaster, its origin remained to be determined. According to the first testimonies collected, a lot of rubbish and other mattresses were regularly deposited on the landings and in the common areas of the building.
