The sad news was announced on Wednesday evening by the management of the Greek Super League. Greek-English footballer George Baldock died at the age of thirty-one. He was found in the pool at the villa on the outskirts of Athens, where he had lived since his transfer to Panathinaikos.
He was found by the owner of the building, who arrived at the scene after an emergency call from the player’s wife, who had not answered the phone for several hours. He then called an ambulance to the scene, but it was already too late. However, only the ordered autopsy will reveal the exact cause of death.
“The entire Super League football family is deeply saddened by the untimely loss of Panathinaikos and our national team player George Baldock and extends its deepest condolences to his family and loved ones,” announced the Greek Super League.
Baldock and his career
Baldock was born in Buckingham, England and began his senior career at League Three side Milton Keynes. He went on loan to the lower leagues, played in Iceland, and then finally made his way into the parent team’s lineup.
From there, he transferred to Sheffield United in the summer of 2017 and was able to play in the Championship, which is the second most efficient league in England. He played regularly and together with his teammates won the Premier League after two years at the club.
After two seasons in it, he fell with the club, but immediately won promotion back. He left his mark in the hearts of fans who mourned his departure. In the summer, his contract expired and the player decided to leave for the Greek Panathinaikos.
The reason was also that he started representing Greece from the 2022/23 season. He played 12 matches in his jersey. But of course he won’t add another one. He played his last match on Sunday, his Panathinaikos drew 0:0 at home with Olympiakos.
