Thirty Belgians take legal action against the State and Minister De Crem over containment measures

The complainants believe that the state “simply” copied the Chinese measures, without taking into account the European Convention on Human Rights.

Pmore than 30 Belgians are suing the Belgian state and the Minister of Home Affairs, Pieter De Crem (CD&V). They believe that the measures taken against the spread of Covid-19 would be contrary to the European Convention on Human Rights. They demand that the measures be immediately lifted, report some Flemish media, including the Nieuwsblad.

Lawyer Michael Verstraeten represents the complainants. According to their defender, these measures were simply copied from those taken in China, without having sufficient knowledge of the virus and without taking into account the European Convention on Human Rights. “If you want to restrict people’s rights and freedoms, you have to set a concrete goal to protect public health,” says the Nieuwsblad.

The plaintiffs are demanding a symbolic euro. Lawyer Michael Verstraeten expects the matter to be dealt with within a few weeks. Minister De Crem is not yet aware of the subpoena, but the authorities will argue the decision process if necessary, his cabinet said.
