The fairy tale seems to have been put on hold. After years of radiant smiles – despite the ups and downs that the royal family found itself experiencing, after the farewell of Harry and Meghan, the disappearance of Prince Philip and that of Queen Elizabeth II – the image of the most popular and beloved has become tarnished. It’s not the fault of the feeling that binds Prince William to her Catherine (together with her for more than twenty years), but of the state of health of the princess, who still remains closed in her private life to continue her cancer treatment that hit her.
While waiting to see them return together on the public scene, we reviewed their “big day”: what did we like most about that day?
1) The tiara that the bride didn’t want
As a good Berkshire country girl, Catherine intended to wear a sort of flower crown on her head under her veil. As her mother had done at her own wedding. Excluded: Kate willingly accepted the precious tiara lent by Elizabeth II to follow royal tradition.
2) Self-made make-up
William and Kate’s wedding was one of the most anticipated events in modern history, and it was surprising to discover that the bride had decided to do her own makeup. Kate’s look for the day was very… her: a touch of pink on the cheeks and smoky eye. Kate took lessons from Bobbi Brown makeup artist Hannah Martin for weeks before the wedding, so as not to misfire in the spotlight.
3) The same lucky charm as Lady Diana
For the marriage to be happy, the bride must wear something old (the wedding dress was a new model but made with an ancient technique, called Carrickmacross, dating back to 1800); a new one (a pair of earrings commissioned by her parents, Carole and Michael Middleton, with the family crest); something on loan (the historic Cartier Halo tiara) and finally: the “something blue” was a little lace heart sewn inside her wedding dress. The same romantic detail had been reserved for Princess Diana’s dress when she married the then Prince Charles, but unfortunately it hadn’t brought her much luck..
4) The groom’s uniform: modified to avoid sweating
The president of Russell Kashket, the official supplier of the uniforms, told the Daily Mail: “(The prince) was aware of the heat factor in the Abbey because he knew that all the lights would warm the air. We worked together to achieve the look he wanted, while making sure he didn’t pass out in front of two billion people. We added micro sweat pads under his arms and used less padding than usual.”
5) The sentence delivered by Prince Harry to his brother
Prince Harry witnessed his brother: “Well, she has arrived. Well, she’s beautiful… I can tell you that,” he tells him when he sees her enter the Abbey.
6) The bride’s sister
Pippa Middleton steals the show from the bride and becomes famous. Thanks to the dress sewn to her shapes, signed by McQueen.
7) The third wheel in the photo destined to go down in history
The tradition of kissing on the balcony of Buckingham Palace was inaugurated by Prince Charles and his bride, Lady Diana. Prince William and Kate’s wedding was no exception, but it was fun to discover that right during the shoot… one of the bridesmaids, Prince William’s goddaughter, Grace Van Cutsem, was caught while she was making tantrums and making strange faces. Her grumpy expression was consigned to history with this photo.
8) The cake destined to be “recycled”
William and Kate put themselves in the hands of British pastry chef Fiona Cairns, who created an eight-tiered fruit cake: the couple decided to save the first three for “future celebrations”. If this seems strange to you, know that it is tradition in the royal family that each child’s baptism cake includes a piece of their parents’ wedding cake. Well preserved, of course, so that it doesn’t make guests feel bad… Ever since then the couple had wanted three children, because there are three layers put aside.
9) Come James Bond con la sua ‘Bond Girl’
On their wedding day, Will and Kate brought to the public’s mind an iconic British character: James Bond. The newlyweds actually boarded an Aston Martin – 007’s vintage car – decorated with the “JUSTWED” license plate. The car actually belonged to King Charles, who received it for his 21st birthday.
10) The florist’s bill
The budget for floral decorations always has a big impact on wedding organisation, but Will and Kate’s was definitely a record-breaking one: 800,000 pounds, including the transport of six maple trees over 7 meters tall which are said to symbolize confidentiality e humility. Luckily, they did not go to waste: years before founding the Earthshot Prize, William was attentive to the environmental cause, as his father, so he donated the trees to him, planted in King Charles’ Welsh holiday home.
