The police arrested a thirteen-year-old boy from Roermond on Sunday afternoon on suspicion of arson in a secondary school in his hometown. He is said to have set fire to an office space in Broekhin College out of dissatisfaction with a teacher.
Because the boy is a minor and has restrictions, which means he is not allowed to talk to anyone other than his lawyer, the police cannot provide any further information.
The fire broke out around 5:45 p.m. Saturday. The suspect left slogans behind, which shows that the arson was aimed at a teacher of the school. A college office was destroyed by the fire. The teacher against whom the arson was aimed would have worked in that room.
Director Marc Demandt of the college called the arson a threat to the teacher and the school. Classes will continue on Monday.
A video, which the perpetrator has posted online, shows how flames flare up in the office and come out under a door. There is a text on the video with the name of the teacher and swear words follow. The perpetrator also partly filmed himself.
