NEW YORK – With Kathy Hochul becoming the first woman to govern in New York, thirteen state monuments will be illuminated to celebrate women’s equality across the state.
Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Tuesday, during her first day in office, that thirteen of New York’s iconic landmarks will be lit up in purple and gold from Aug. 24 through Aug. 26 in honor of Equality Day. Woman.
“New York is home to the Women’s Rights Movement, where pioneers did everything they could to forge a path to freedom for women around the world,” said Governor Hochul. “I am honored to be the first female governor of New York State and I look forward to sending a message to women and girls around the world that they can be whatever they want to be. This Women’s Equality Day, I encourage everyone to look up at the glass ceiling and break it, even though women have come this far, we still have a way to go. “
The landmarks to be illuminated include:
- One World Trade Center
- Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge
- Kosciuszko Bridge
- The H. Carl McCall SUNY Building
- State Education Building
- Alfred E. Smith State Office Building
- State Fairgrounds – Main Gate and Expo Center
- Niagara Falls (August 24 and 26 only)
- The “Franklin D. Roosevelt” Mid-Hudson Bridge
- Grand Central Terminal – Pershing Square Viaduct
- Albany International Airport Gateway
- The Lake Placid Olympic Jumping Complex
- MTA LIRR – East End Gateway at Penn Station
