Third Ukrainian Truck Driver Dies in Border Blockades: Protest by Polish Truck Drivers

A third Ukrainian truck driver has died in blockades on the border with Poland organized by Polish truck drivers, Reuters reported, citing local media. The driver felt ill at the Krakovec-Korchova border crossing – one of the four crossings affected by the protests. He died on the way to the hospital.

Last month, two truck drivers died after running into roadblocks.

The protesting drivers claim that Ukrainian drivers are undercutting their prices. Kiev argues that the volume of traffic amid the war makes the truck permit system unenforceable. Polish drivers have been blocking border crossings since November 6, demanding that the EU restore the system that requires Ukrainian companies to obtain permits to operate in the bloc and European truck drivers to obtain permits to enter Ukraine.

One of the border crossings, Jachodyn-Dorohusk, was opened to traffic this week but may be closed again after a court ruled that a Polish mayor could not ban truck drivers from staging a protest in his municipality.
