Third Swede in space ever – stem cells from Uppsala are included

In six weeks, the third Swedish astronaut will ever go into space – Marcus Wandt will have stem cells from Uppsala University in the package.

It is about a unique research project that hopes to contribute to the use of stem cells in the cure of diseases.

– I think this research can help against many kinds of diseases in the future, for example treatment for Parkinson’s, says Elena Kozlova, professor of regenerative neurobiology at Uppsala University.

It is not the first time that these particular stem cells – which come from mice – have been sent up into space, but last time it was only a matter of a few minutes. This time, the cells will be exposed to the microgravity of space for a full two weeks as part of Kozlova’s research project.

“Passionate about research”

Up to space also brings another Swedish research project on ergonomics from KTH, both projects have been selected and financed by the Swedish Space Agency.

Marcus Wandt himself has previously described his enthusiasm for research promotion and will also act as a test subject during the stay.

– I am very passionate about research and development, pushing boundaries. Space is such a tool, he said earlier this summer during a press conference.
