Third of home buyers immediately make their home more sustainable | Money

Last year this percentage was still 21%. A spokesperson for the organization behind NHG says that there has been an upward trend for years, but the high energy prices provide an extra incentive to become more sustainable. In 2018, only 8% of all home buyers with an NHG mortgage borrowed money to make their home more sustainable.

In the case of NHG mortgages that were only taken out for renovations, the share of financing for sustainability increased in the first quarter to more than 55%. That was less than 37% a year earlier.

With the NHG guarantee, home buyers can insure themselves against a one-off payment of repayment of their mortgage in the event of the death of their partner or a breakup. This also depresses the mortgage interest.

However, the guarantee is only available for houses up to a purchase price of €355,000. Houses that now change hands below that price often date from before 1970 and are less well insulated.
