In one week, the number of corona patients in intensive care units in Belgian hospitals has increased by 35%, to 124. There are now 454 people with COVID-19 in hospitals, or 24% more than on Wednesday, August 4. In the past week, an average of 48.3 people with corona were admitted to hospitals every day, an increase of 26%. At the same time, Sciensano reports that less than 3% of those hospitalized are fully vaccinated.

The number of corona infections is still rising, but that increase seems to be slowing down. Between August 2 and August 8, an average of 1,738 new cases were registered daily, an increase of 8%. Together with the other indicators, the number of deaths is still rising. Over the same period, an average of 3.6 deaths were reported each day, an increase of 14%.
71.4% got first shot
On average, just over 50,000 tests were performed, of which 3.9% proved positive. That is 0.7% more than in the previous period. The total number of tests decreased by 8%. The positivity ratio remains highest among children between 0 and 9 years (5.7%) and among adults between 20 and 39 years (4.3%). The reproduction number is 1.16.
The data from Sciensano shows that 71.4% of the entire population received a first shot. Also, 7.45 million people have already been fully vaccinated (64.7%). The vaccines from Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna are now also available for young people from the age of 12. By Tuesday, nearly 450,000 (449,964) young people between the ages of 12 and 17 had received their first dose of a vaccine.
More 20- to 39-year-olds in hospital
Less than 3% of people who end up in hospital with COVID-19 are fully vaccinated. This is apparent from the most recent figures from health institute Sciensano, which run until 17 July. According to epidemiologist Boudewijn Catry van Sciensano, this once again underlines the importance of getting vaccinated.
Almost all covid patients who were recently hospitalized were therefore not (yet) fully vaccinated. There has been a notable increase among 20 to 39-year-olds being hospitalized after a corona infection, but many of them, especially the youngest in that age group, have not yet had the chance to get a vaccine or have only one. shot and are not fully protected. Catry expects hospitalizations among them to drop once they are fully immunized.
The epidemiologist also notes that the vaccination rate in 25-34 year olds is slowing down. According to him, a little extra effort will have to be made to convince them to get vaccinated. Extra efforts are also needed in Brussels to convince people.
