Third free dental clinic opens for uninsured children in Wake County

The Regional Smiles program just opened a new dental clinic in Zebulon Township, in eastern Wake County, to serve him. children without health insurance from zero to 20 years.

Wake County’s dental program is an extension of the award-winning Smiles at Sunnybrook program, offering everything from dental exams and cleanings to free x-rays and fluoride applications for those under 20 at do not have health insurance.

This clinic, which operates within the Eastern Regional Center in Zebulon, offers monthly dental appointments, as part of a program designed to help increase access to medical care in underserved areas of the county.

“Access to quality dental care is essential to a child’s overall health and well-being. A healthy smile not only increases self-esteem and confidence, but also lays the foundation for a better future,” said Susan Evans, vice-chairman of the Wake. Board of County Commissioners.

Evans emphasized that the hope with the program is also to teach good oral hygiene habits to more children and young adults to prepare them for a lifetime of healthy smiles.

More than 6,200 children served since 2017

The Smiles at Sunnybrook program is an initiative funded by a grant from the Trust Office of Rural Health of North Carolina, and gave dental care no-cost preventive care for uninsured children ages zero to 20 at the Wake County Public Health Center on Sunnybrook Road in Raleigh.

As of October 2017, the program has served over 6,200 children in the community.

They hope to open other clinics in Wake County

Regional Smiles first expanded to the North Regional Center in February 2023. Later to the South Regional Center in October 2023. After this new clinic in Zebulon, county leaders will now look to donations to expansion to additional locations in the regional centers.
