At the beginning of November, a baroque wind will once again blow in the Bulgaria Concert Complex.
The third “Baroque Art” festival, with the support of the Metropolitan Municipality, will offer Sofia residents, as well as music lovers from other cities such as Rousse and Kyustendil, a series of exciting encounters with European music from the Baroque era.
Works by 20 composers will be performed on instruments typical of the time in which they were created. The festival will be opened on 07.11.2009 by Consort for early music “Concerto Antico”. This Bulgarian chamber formation has many successful appearances at prestigious festivals in Europe, but the choice of the organizers is not only for that reason, but also because of the depth, creative approach and originality in the selection of the repertoire. On November 17, 2009, English music will be heard in the Bulgaria Chamber Hall. Pavani, fantasias and galliards will be performed on the harpsichord by the German graduate student in music, Tsvetana Ivanova.
Claudio Monteverdi’s lovely work “The Zephyr Returns” will not be performed, but the namesake of the wind, sung by the Italian composer, the violinist Zefira Valova, returns on November 21 as concertmaster of the European Baroque Orchestra. In his program “The Harmony of Nature” are included works by Johann Fuchs, Johann Schmelzer, Georg Muffat, Rupert Mayr, and also by the well-known and loved by the wider public A. Vivaldi and A. Corelli. The head of the orchestra is Petra Müleyans – artistic director of the recognized leader among baroque formations – the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra. Leader of the second violins – again he is Bulgarian – Ivan Iliev. The other participants are from Austria, Great Britain, Germany, Italy, Spain, France, Malta, Finland, Czech Republic, Sweden. The concert is in Bulgaria Hall on November 21st, and on November 22nd in the Revenue Building in the city of Ruse.
On November 24 is the “Conierti italiani” concert by the Cordevento ensemble with works by Scarlatti, Vivaldi and Handel. Audience favorites recorder player Eric Bosgraaf, guitarist Izhar Elias and harpsichordist Alessandro Piano will also perform as a trio on November 26, and school and university students interested in historical musical practices will be able to join a masterclass conducted by the three virtuosos .
December 1 is the closing concert “melanholicus & Sanguineus”. On an original instrument-piano – the talented St. Petersburg master Vasily Ilisavsky together with Galina Draganova, Zefira Valova and Ivan Iliev will present early classics.
