Third Eruption of Volcano in Reykjavik, Iceland: Jakarta News Updates

Jakarta

volcano in Reykjavik, Iceland, erupted. The local meteorological office said this was the third eruption in two years.

Reported by AFP, Tuesday (11/7/2023) the eruption began to occur on Monday (10/7) local time. An eruption was reported to the north of Litli Hrutur.

“The eruption occurred in a small basin to the north of Litli Hrutur, from where smoke was escaping towards the northwest,” the office said.

Footage circulating in local media showed a huge plume of smoke rising from the ground, as well as a sizable lava flow. Thousands of small earthquakes had been recorded in the area in the week leading up to the eruption.

This earthquake is said to indicate that magma underground is moving and an eruption is imminent. Magma penetrated the ground around 16:40 GMT, just kilometers from the two previous eruptions in the last two years.

The first recorded eruption of this volcano occurred on March 19, 2021 in the Geldingadalur valley and lasted for six months. While the second occurred on August 3, 2022 in the Meradalir valley, lasting for three weeks.

The effusive eruption that has occurred in this area has so far been described as not too dangerous and has not had any impact on air traffic.

Prior to the 2021 eruption, the region had remained inactive for eight centuries, but volcanologists believe the new cycle of increased activity could last several years.
