Third earthquake in one day in Groningen, near Zeerijp, magnitude 2.3 | Inland

There was an earthquake near Appingedam on Monday afternoon around 3.30 pm. According to automatic measurements by the KNMI, the quake had a magnitude of 1.8. In the morning around 5 a.m., there was also an earthquake with a magnitude of 2.5 at the village of Zeerijp, 10 kilometers away, near Loppersum.

According to the KNMI, the earthquake near Appingedam on Monday afternoon was not an aftershock of the previous quake. It is not yet known about the quake late Monday evening. All quakes were measured at a depth of approximately 3 kilometers.

The earthquakes in the north of Groningen are caused by gas extraction in the area around Loppersum and Appingedam. The heaviest earthquake was near the village of Huizinge in 2012. It had a magnitude of 3.6. Huizinge is located a few kilometers west of Zeerijp.
