Third dose: Minsalud evaluates combining vaccines in third dose – Health

Fernando Ruiz Gómez, Minister of Health, said that the combination of vaccines against covid-19, especially for booster dose in some population groups.

Ruiz assured that the application of a third dose for people with immunosuppression problems has already been approved (low defenses due to diseases, treatments or other conditions) and in that sense the possibility of applying a dose of the mRNA platform (such as those of Pfizer and Modern) regardless of those they have previously received.

“That eventuality already exists, the evidence is showing that it is positive to combine vaccines and we are awaiting the results of some studies, especially a very large one that is being carried out with more than 13 million people to have clarity and advance in the possibility of applying these reinforcements with a different vaccine“Ruiz Gómez concludes.

What is the difference between a booster dose and an additional dose?

The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that sometimes people who have a immune system moderately to severely depressed do not provide enough protection when they first get vaccinated, and when this happens, giving them another dose of the vaccine may help them be more protective against disease.

According to the CDC, this seems to be the case for some immunosuppressed people with respect to vaccines against covid-19, so they recommend that they analyze the possibility of applying an “additional” dose (third dose) with a mRNA vaccine at least 28 days after completing the initial schedule.

On the other hand, a “booster dose”, according to the same CDC, refers to another dose of a vaccine that is given to a person who created “enough protection after getting vaccinated”, but whose protection was reduced over time, that is, it has a decrease in immunity so that this condition could be improved if booster doses are applied.

In Colombia, for now, there is talk of booster doses for people who, because they have low defenses, may not have generated enough defenses against SARS-CoV 2 or have decreased them after having been fully vaccinated and it is precisely in them that it refers Minister Ruiz.
