Not favorite AKC/Luma, leader in the regular competition, but cup holder Borgerhout/GW came out on top in the korfball cup final in a sun-drenched Deurne in front of a crowd of people. Borgerhout/GW, which recently won the indoor title, was more clever and more effective in the decisive moments than competitor AKC/Luma. It eventually won with 16-13.
Both teams kept each other in balance until 5-5, then Borgerhout/GW closed the gap to 8-5 under the impulse of captain Glenn Pauwels. From that moment on, AKC/Luma was behind the times and did not get any further than leveling at 8-8. Via 11-8 Borgerhout/Gwendolyn steamed to 14-12. VKC/Lumay briefly threatened at 14-13, but Pauwels and Amorgaste turned the lights off for good.
The joy of Borgerhout captain Glenn Pauwels, who played a major role in this cup win with six goals, was particularly great. “After winning the indoor title, we quickly felt in the field competition that the best had gone. We lost some games and were soon out of contention for the prizes. The focus was then placed on this final. I think we peaked well. In the end we took a sensible approach after the 8-5. They were never able to take over, which made it easier for us.”

A little further away, Jaro Peeters was glowing after the last match in his long career. A few seconds before the end he even received a well-deserved applause replacement. “I wanted to say goodbye at a nice moment. I succeeded. This was not the highlight. That was the win of the indoor title a few weeks ago. But saying goodbye here is also very nice. Next season I’ll be on the other side of the fence. Something I already did as a little boy. Let me say that from a nostalgic point of view, this is a perfect ending.”

Peeters looked back on this third cup win with satisfaction. “We knew they wanted to score very quickly. We deliberately slowed down the pace and pushed things when we had to. With three cup victories, one field and one indoor title in eight finals, I think I can say that I am proud of what I have achieved.”
There was disappointment and disillusionment with AKC captain Jari Hardies. “We failed to play behind them in the initial phase. Afterwards we always had to chase against a smart and sophisticated Borgerhout/GW, who knew how to choose his moments well. Certainly at the end when we had to score, we occasionally made the wrong shot choice.”
