According to Sciensano, it is all about children between one month and ten years. One of the three children, whose infection is the most recent, is currently still in hospital. Another case was never hospitalized, the third child was already allowed to leave the hospital. Sciensano does not provide further information about the children with liver inflammation.

In addition, Sciensano has re-examined a number of older cases since October 1, 2021. Two other possible cases were also identified, but it is impossible to provide a definitive answer as further laboratory research is no longer possible.

“The investigation into new possible cases is in full swing. We expect new reports, but for now it looks like the condition is rare in Belgium. We don’t yet know whether there is a common cause and whether or not the condition is caused by a virus,” Sciensano said.

According to the latest figures from the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), there are already more than 55 confirmed cases in European Union countries and Norway. Earlier, 111 cases were also reported in the United Kingdom. Most patients recovered, but in a few cases there was acute liver failure requiring a liver transplant.
