Third canola plant announced in Saskatchewan

Ceres Global Ag Corp plans to build a canola processing plant in Northgate, southeast Saskatchewan, near the U.S. border, in 2024.

The $ 350 million project will be located 275 kilometers from Regina. Ceres Global Ag Corp executives say the plant will be able to process 1.1 million tonnes of canola per year, while creating 50 jobs.

There are several factors that led to this decision, but the most important is the energy transition and the demands related to vegetable oil for the production of renewable diesel.said Ceres CEO Robert Day in a press release.

The announcement comes a month after the unveiling of two more canola plant projects in Regina, led by Viterra and Cargill.

The Cargill plant is also expected to cost nearly $ 350 million, with production capacity similar to that of the announced Ceres plant. It is also expected to create 50 jobs in 2024.

The Viterra plant is still evaluating its feasibility, but plans to double in production – just over 2 million tonnes of canola – and job creation.

Saskatchewan Agriculture Minister David Marit says the province produced nearly 11 million tonnes of canola in 2020.
