Third Age Rappers: Cuban Elderly Women Take Social Media by Storm

The “Third Age Rappers”, a group of elderly Cuban women who had already caught the attention of Will Smith during one of his visits to Cuba, have taken the social networks by storm. His most recent performance on Cubavisión’s “Ruta 10” program has unleashed a wave of virality and enthusiastic comments.

The journalist Ernesto Morales shared a short video of the grandmothers improvising on a song by Benny Moré, accompanied by the sarcastic comment:

“Las Raperas de la 3ra Edad, offer of the program ‘Ruta10’ of the Cuban Television for this summer.” In the recording, three of them sing fervently as the leader adds her signature touch with an “anjá, anjá.” The stylized presentation of her in blue clothes and sunglasses has generated more than 7,000 reactions and 3,000 comments on Morales’s profile.

The distinctive refrain “We are the rappers of the third age, we sing, we dance, we really rap…” reflects the unique identity of this singular group. Although some voices celebrate his attitude and self-confidence, others doubt his talent and express concern.

One of the commentators expressed his concerns: “Bankization, bamboo bicycles, and this now. I’m worried about what’s next…” However, many join in applauding their willingness and the power of expression they have found through rap.

The influence of the “Rappers of the Third Age” is not limited to public opinion. Even Will Smith himself paid attention to them in March 2019 by sharing an endearing video of him on social networks. Under the title “The Girls of Yesterday. Straight Outta Habana!”, the actor presented a funny video where the grannies, dressed as authentic rappers, shared a moment in a street gym in Havana.

Despite the conflicting opinions, it is clear that “Elderly Female Rappers” have left an indelible mark on the digital world and have shown that age is not an impediment to expressing oneself and spreading joy.

Her courageous attitude and desire to participate in contemporary culture are an inspiring reminder that passions and art can transcend generations and break down barriers. Her success on social media is a celebration of diversity and proof that creativity has no limits.
