Thionville-Yutz. The start of the IUT is “much more complex than the others”

A bachelor’s degree

The information has gone a little under the media radas but it is a fact: the university diplomas of technology in two years (DUT) disappear in favor of the university bachelors of technology (BUT) in three years. “For us, this is the absolute stake of the new school year” indicates the director of the IUT, Antonietta Specogna. The challenge is high: it is necessary to make two systems coexist for a year; think about the aftermath, when the campus will physically keep its students for longer and it will be necessary to “find a place…” Teachers are on the front line and seem to be straining their backs in the face of a reform carried out at a forced march in the midst of Covid. “We’re not just talking about a new title. The bachelor is a change of philosophy; a new approach to knowledge, by skills. This requires more collaborative and autonomous work. Teachers must review their practices, ”lists the deputy director of the IUT, Franck Mouillebouche. Surprising as it may seem, the new diploma is on track while its layout and contents are not fully ready. Only the first year is marked. Never seen. Perilous? “We are making a comeback that is much more complex than the others,” admits Antonietta Specogna soberly.

Presence and protocol

After two years marked by distance education, the IUT is finding all of its staff in face-to-face. Or 450 students; thirty-seven tenured teachers, around one hundred temporary teaching staff. “This return to” normal “was expected, distance education has shown its limits,” agrees the director. Wearing a mask, provision of gel, direction of movement, presence of “Covid guides” in the corridors: everything is there, it is now a routine. Distancing is a recommendation but not an obligation; ventilation should compensate. “In the amphitheater, we have enough space to maintain the system from one seat in two”, continues the director. The practical arrangements for the vaccination of students have not yet arrived.

Alternation is coming

After one year of operation, the HSE (health safety environment) sector should open up to apprenticeship. “Eight students signed up for the first time. They will work on a work-study basis in large companies: ArcelorMittal, PSA, Muller TP, Sovab, etc. ”, notes Franck Mouillebouche, who is also responsible for the department.

In addition, the professional non-destructive testing license (attached to the industrial engineering department) opens a work-study group on the Villepinte site, where the Welding Institute has its head office. “A result that we owe to our networking”, emphasizes Antonietta Specogna.
