THIONVILLE. With the end of telework, animal abandonments are exploding

We cannot really speak of a wave of abandonment. However, for two months, the trend has been on the rise in cats, dogs and new pets. At the refuge of the society for the protection of animals (SPA) in Thionville, while the critical period of the summer holidays is fast approaching, “we have requests for abandonment every day”, indicates Jennifer Megna, the manager, who mentions the existence of a “waiting list”. There is an explanation for this: deconfinement. “The confinement decided some people to take an animal because they had time. But with the resumption in person, it becomes more difficult to deal with it, ”continues Jennifer Megna. And, against all odds, it is especially cats who pay the price for this return to a “normal” life.

+ 16% abandonment of Nac

The Thionville SPA, which has increased the number of its treatments, all animals combined – by 11% in two years – has taken in around thirty cats in recent months for a total of nearly a hundred felines present at the refuge. It is no coincidence that the SPA’s summer campaign this year focuses on felines with an animated film defending the idea that cats can also be taken on vacation. “Cats suffer from abandonment more than dogs. I have had depressed cats who let themselves starve and who had to be infused ”. Another phenomenon, the increase (+ 16%) of abandonments of NAC (new pets) such as rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, mice, ferrets which also suffer from the recovery. “From thirty to forty, we went to 120,” sighs the person in charge of the Thionville refuge.

“Summer promises to be complicated”

“Fortunately we have had a lot of adoptions (especially dogs and cats) in recent weeks,” continues Jennifer Megna. The refuge, which has a maximum capacity of 70 cats and 49 dogs, therefore has a little leeway before the summer surge. But for how long ? “Summer promises to be complicated,” confirms the Thionvilloise. Especially since in recent months, the seizures of mistreated animals operated by the anti-trafficking cell have reached records.
