THIONVILLE. The IUT Thionville-Yutz cramped in its premises

At the IUT of Thionville-Yutz, created in 1995, pushing the walls becomes a necessity. The distribution of rooms has become a real headache for the director, Antonietta Specogna who must respect strict gauges. “From an educational point of view, the start of the 2023 school year promises to be complicated. We have specificities in terms of rooms – laboratories – linked to the nature of our training. A group of practical work is thirteen students, sometimes even less, which forces us to multiply the dedicated spaces in the same time slot. “And the director to clarify:” It is not the square meters that we lack, it is a problem of functionality. The building was designed for two departments, but we have four. »

Constantly increasing workforce

Space optimization is a constant concern. A reflection group on the use of rooms has even been set up. “Extending the building would be justified,” said Emmanuel Bertin, chairman of the board of directors and deputy mayor of Thionville in charge of education. Because the numbers are constantly increasing, especially since the DUT, a Bac + 2 level diploma, has been transformed into a GOAL, a Bac + 3 level diploma. “Across the four departments, we had two promotions that overlapped on the premises. We now have three,” continues Emmanuel Bertin. Other developments are to come, such as the opening of a new course in biological engineering and a first year of law (starting in 2024) which will only be partially housed in IUT premises.

“For the time being, we are at the stage of adding up the findings to justify a need”, indicates the chairman of the board of directors. Technically speaking, the extension would be possible since the IUT Thionville-Yutz has a land reservoir: “From the outset, the building was designed to be enlarged”, confirms Emmanuel Bertin.
