Thionville. Squats, rats, faulty elevator… hell for a resident of the Bécasse tower

This building is part of a large work plan in the Côte des Roses/Bel-Air district, as part of the New National Program for Urban Renewal. The time of demolition – scheduled for 2024 – or relocation, Lionel suffers.

4 squatted dwellings

For about two years, housing has been illegally occupied. Families have taken possession of empty apartments to make them their own, as at the Tour du Chevreuil. Lionel denounces the consequences. “There are traces of blood on the stairs following fights, shouting all day and noise in the evenings. We are not safe. I’m afraid to let my daughter buy an ice cream alone when the ice cream truck arrives, ”breathes the Moselle.

Moselis deplores this situation through the voice of his deputy director. A fortnight ago, the social landlord identified four “squatted housing”. “We cannot expel them from a legal point of view,” admits Franck Ceccato. Moselis has secured the empty homes.

Stopped elevator

Lionel suffers from the knee. Living on a high floor, the elevator remains essential. This often breaks down. Repairs can take time. Some companies have already expressed their right of withdrawal fearing violence. The Moselle dreads being stuck in his apartment following an upcoming operation. The social landlord makes carriers available during breakdowns. Lionel did not see the color of it. “How am I going to get on? he asks himself. Moselis denounces “numerous incivilities of squatters”.

Rats in the toilet

After water damage suffered on January 1, Lionel also lives with the rats. A company undertook work, made a hole in the wall, without filling it. The Mosellan found a rat and excrement in his toilet. He is afraid. “It’s horrible, I can’t live where there are rats, with my disabled son and my granddaughter,” he concludes. Until a rehousing that lasts, Lionel is blocked. With the rats, the bloodstains on the stairs and the fear in my stomach.
