Because if there is a shortage of magistrates, “the activity of the jurisdiction does not weaken”, recalls Brice Partouche, public prosecutor of Thionville. His department recorded an increase in cases handled over the first nine months of 2023. “Immediate appearances increased by 50%, 140 judgments were rendered,” illustrates the prosecutor. “It’s more than Colmar, than Reims…”, he adds.

Another figure marks this solemn installation hearing: in Thionville, 80% of the magistrates who make up the bench and the prosecution are women.

The latest appointments confirm the trend. Héloïse Ferrari will now preside over criminal and civil hearings, Véronique Beaugrand is appointed president of the commercial chamber, Cécile Giacometti will judge civil interests and correctional hearings. Stéphanie Courtin joins the prosecution as deputy prosecutor. Magistrates have varied professional profiles. Only the first followed the classic route of the National School of Magistrates.
