Badminton legend MalaysiaLee Chong Wei also opened his voice about controversial comments Bong Guang Yik.
Chong Wei emphasized that sport always upholds respect. Therefore he emphasized that there is no room for comments that destroy unity.
“Sport respects and does not accept racial things. Don’t occasionally, just for the sake of fame, then destroy the harmony of people that has been built not just in 1-2 days, but decades after decades.”
“Consider him a rotten apple, friends,” Lee Chong Wei said on his social media account, quoted from Daily news.
Bong Guang Yik’s comments when criticizing Malaysia’s performance in the world of badminton drew criticism. Initially, he mentioned the appearance of the Malaysian players at the Malaysia Open.
But after that, the criticism he made of BAM’s performance was accompanied by comments with racial undertones. He alluded to the Malay race and also the matter of praying.
Bong Guang Yik’s behavior later drew criticism from many parties. Malaysia’s Minister of Youth and Sports, Hannah Yeoh has also issued a condemnation.
“I do not agree with his comments on social media and strongly condemn any remarks related to race and religion despite his apologies.”
“I believe that religious worship has never interfered with the achievements of athletes and sports. This has never been a problem in Malaysia,” said Hannah Yeoh.
The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) has also taken action. They will seriously address this by trying to establish communication with the Chinese Badminton Association (CBA).
Bong Guang Yik is a former Malaysian player who is currently in China to coach. Bong Guang Yik has issued an apology for his actions.
“I want to sincerely apologize to everyone. The reason I am posting my comments is because I love this sport.”
“I feel I have a responsibility to try and fix sport and the industry for the benefit of all. That’s why I say all levels of management must be good. I, however, shouldn’t touch on racial issues and for that, I apologize again,” said Guang Yik.
