In order to see the first colorful flowers in the garden very early next year, the corresponding flower bulbs should be planted in the ground in autumn. The soil is still warm and moist so it offers the best conditions for flower bulbs to take root well. These early bloomers are especially important for wild bees and the first bumble bees, which fly through the gardens in February in search of nectar and pollen. The early bloomers show us that winter is coming to an end.

Among the most important plants for insects are winter aconites and snowdrops. Depending on the weather, they come out of the ground towards the end of January and provide valuable food for the wild bees. For example, depending on the variety, the dwarf tulip grows up to 15 centimeters high and is available in different flower colors. The place should be as sunny as possible. The grape hyacinth also adds color to the early beds with its many small blue flowers. If you like onion plants that grow taller, you could try Persian crown imperial. It grows up to one meter in height and has many blue bell-shaped flowers. In summer the plant likes sunny, very dry and hot conditions.

Flower bulbs are a real delight for voles. To protect the bulbs, they should be wrapped with a tight mesh chick or rabbit wire before planting. Tip: When buying a flower bulb, press the bulb lightly with your hand (press test). If the onion is soft and gives a lot, it is better not to buy it. A healthy plant only grows from a solid bulb.
