Tomorrow is Ascension Day. And it promises to be a great day to go out with about 16 degrees and an alternation of sun and cumulus clouds. Below are some tips.

The traditional Ascension Market is held in Gieterveen. The market consists of a large flea market and a fair. Many residents of the village sell their own merchandise in their own driveway. In the church in Gieterveen there is an exhibition of photographs and ceramics, where local painters show their most beautiful works. There is a large book market in the PKN church and volunteers bake bread in a clay oven at the De Eendracht mill.

The official opening of the market is at 10 a.m., the first stalls are there from 6 a.m.

It’s National Steam Train Day at Museumspoorlijn STAR. The steam train runs between Stadskanaal, Veendam and Nieuw-Buinen. In addition to the steam train, there will also be a historic diesel train. Special attention is paid to how parcels were transported by rail in the past.

Highland Games are held in Koekange. Highland Games are a 19th century continuation of traditional games from the Highlands of Scotland. The scene of battle is the meadow on the Harm Smeengestraat. A total of seventeen teams compete against each other to show their strength, agility and team spirit in various challenging events. The teams compete against each other from 12:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

In the center of Diever is the annual art market. Creations by artists can be seen at various stalls. There are also demonstrations, so that as a visitor you can see how works of art are made. The art market is held around the Pancratius Church and lasts from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

About ninety ceramists from the Netherlands and abroad will show their most beautiful work at the Brink van Dwingeloo. You can discuss the work with the artist. There are also several demonstrations. A jury evaluates the work of the ceramists and awards two prizes. The market is from 10am to 5pm.
