Things no less harmful than smoking

Even if you do not smoke, there will always be habits, which is worth giving up or starting, to extend life and make it better. for instance, start getting enough sleep. Or stop sunbathing.

Smoking is harmful. Cardiovascular diseases caused by tobacco use are the main cause of death in Russia; smoking harms the lungs, brain, and unborn children. Anyone will give you a lecture on this. But there are other bad habits that are spoken of less. They are no less, and perhaps more destructive, than a cigarette smoked after dinner. Excluding them from your life individually or all at once is your choice. But any step taken in this direction will make life more pleasant – and maybe longer.

Loneliness

It kills. Lack of social connections can be a direct cause of death (there is no one to help during illness or injury), but it can kill slowly. According to Julian Holt-Lanstead, a psychologist at the University of Birmingham, loneliness shortens life expectancy just like the habit of smoking 15 cigarettes a day.

Sedentary lifestyle

Office chair is the main enemy of the health of urban residents. A 2014 meta-study showed that the more time a person spends sitting or lying down, the greater the risk of developing many diseases – cancer of the intestine, lung and cervix. It doesn’t matter if you play sports in your free time: a chair, sofa and chair continue to kill you while you are relaxing or working.

Lack of sleep

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is warning Americans: sleep disturbances are a national problem, and 50–70 million Americans are affected. They are echoed by WHO experts: lack of sleep increases the risk of heart attack and stroke and is almost as dangerous for blood vessels as smoking.

Sun and tanning salons

In 2014, an article was published in the JAMA magazine in which scientists from the University of California proved that tanning beds provoke skin cancer more often than smoking – lung cancer.

Malnutrition and unbalanced diet

Sugar, canned food, saturated fatty acids – all this WHO considers no less dangerous than cigarettes. A 2016 study confirmed that unhealthy diets kill more people around the world than alcohol, tobacco, and the effects of unprotected sex combined.
