Mexico City. On the tenth anniversary of the crimes against the Ayotzinapa normalistas, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador acknowledged that “things became complicated” and truth and justice were not achieved during his mandate.
“But the truth always makes its way and justice takes time, but it comes. We have to move forward,” he said this Thursday morning.
He did not miss the opportunity to express his solidarity with the families of the students, 43 of them victims of forced disappearance and another three murdered on the so-called Iguala night, September 26 and 27, 2014.
“I do not want to stop expressing my feelings, my sadness, and expressing my solidarity with the mothers and fathers of the young people of Ayotzinapa, today marks 10 years since their disappearance,” he said.
He emphasized that in his administration “we did everything to find the young people and no one was protected, we wanted to know everything. “Things became complicated, they are tangled, complicated, due to interests.”
On the eve of the end of his government, he indicated that in the few days he still has in office, he will continue working to try to find the whereabouts of the normalistas.
“And as I expressed in the letter, which I wrote to you, which I sent (to the families), Claudia Sheinbaum, the next president, is a very sensitive woman, she is going to give the investigation a hard time. There is no, let it be very clear to you, I tell you honestly, with all my feelings, there is no impunity for anyone.”
Regarding the unprecedented security operation that is taking place in the vicinity of the capital’s Zócalo—where the families of the young people and thousands of protesters will arrive this afternoon to demand justice and truth in the case—the president asserted that the intention is to prevent.
“They are going to demonstrate, they have every right to do so, we must understand what the loss of a human being means, especially when it is a child.”
He added: “Although they are very fair demands, of course, there are always provocateurs, people who take advantage of circumstances, opportunists, sectarians, conservatives who would like to harm us.
“Then we have to protect the historical buildings, in this case the Cathedral, the National Palace, because not only the dads and moms come, right-wing groups come, very conservative, those who cover their faces and throw stones, rockets, etc. , Molotov cocktails and seek to do harm. So, without repression, because our government has not and will not have repression, we are going to ensure that there is a peaceful demonstration,” he concluded.
