Thieves Steal Runway Lights at Nigeria’s Busiest Airport, Investigations Underway – Authorities Vow to Recover Lost Lighting System

Jakarta

Thieves in this country are fairly greedy. Because, they even stole the runway lights at an airport.

“Thieves have stolen the lighting system for one of the runways at Nigeria’s busiest airport. The stunt was only months after it was installed,” airport authority spokesman, Yakubu Funtua told BBCquoted Saturday (15/7/2023).

“Now the authorities have launched an investigation. They want to catch the criminals and recover what they have lost,” he added.

It is not clear when the lighting system was taken from Murtala Muhammad International Airport in Lagos.

However, local media reported that airport workers were involved in the theft.

Ground lights were installed on the runway in November. The facility ended years of dusk-and-night landing restrictions and allowed planes to land on the airport’s wing.

Domestic airlines were forced to divert their landings to the international section of the runway and park the planes about 4 km to their terminals. This caused flight disruptions.

Funtua said that the Nigerian Federal Airports Authority would block all loopholes to prevent similar incidents in the future.

“The criminals are taking advantage of the fact that the runway has been closed for months for the maintenance of the lighting system,” an unidentified source told Nigerian newspaper Punch.

The source blamed a syndicate of workers at the airport along with outside criminals for the series of thefts.
