“A few days ago, in the final stages of the negotiations on the composition of the Commission, you asked France to withdraw my candidacy – for personal reasons which he did not discuss with me,” Breton noted, among other things, in the letter to the president of the Commission , which was published in X.

This development gives an explosive and unexpected twist to von der Leyen’s plans for the formation of the new Commission, notes Politico. In particular, regarding the president’s attempt to form a team with a balanced representation of both sexes.

Breton accused von der Leyen of offering France a stronger portfolio in the next commission if Macron withdrew the 69-year-old’s nomination. This is a tactic that he had tried in smaller EU member states.
“During the last five years, I have fought tirelessly to support and promote the common European good, above national and party interests. It was my honor,” he saidBreton wrote in his letter.
“However, in light of these latest developments, I must confess that I am no longer able to carry out my duties at the Commission”he noted.
