Dominic Thiem is preparing for his return to the ATP tour at home.
Our superstar has not played a tennis match since June 22nd. A tear in the tendon sheath and the associated joint capsule slowed the Lower Austrian. After all, last week he was finally able to take off the bracer and start training again. But time is running out: the US Open will begin in two weeks, where the 27-year-old would have to defend his previous year’s title. He really wants to return to the tour in the Big Apple. “That is my goal that I have in the back of my mind, but it will be very, very close. Something can change every day, but I hope that I can play,” said Thiem.
Physically he is ready for a Grand Slam
The only good thing that had his injury break is that the Lichtenwörther had a lot of time for physical training. “I was able to do everything that didn’t put a strain on the wrist, even my upper body, shoulder, playing tennis with my left hand.” Hopefully his general fitness will ensure that it does not take long before he can play matches again after resuming punch training, hopes the sixth in the world rankings.
New world ranking gives time to return
Due to the Corona crisis, the already complicated world ranking system was changed. A circumstance that will benefit the “Dominator” before his comeback. He can barely lose points, but only win with better results. Even if Thiem cannot compete in New York, he would only be threatened with falling to ninth place. After that he has no more points to defend. In other words: He does not have to deliver until 2022, when the old system is to be reactivated, and can take his time until then.
