Tennis player Dominic Thiem celebrates his first grand slam laurel. The Austrian player won this year’s US Open after winning the final over the German Alexander Zverev. The second set already lost 0: 2 to the sets, but in the end, after four hours and a minute, he used the third match ball and won 2: 6, 4: 6, 6: 4, 6: 3 and 7: 6.
Twenty-seven-year-old Thiem lost only one hundred on the way to the final, but tied nervously, he started badly. He lost the first two sets and served 1: 2 in the third set. However, he immediately regained the lost service, started to play more accurately and equalized to 2: 2 on sets.
The decisive set was the desire of both to win their first grand slam title, and along with fatigue they played hard. Thiem had already lost 3: 5, but he did not allow Zverev to finish the duel. He failed the service alone at 6.5 and decided to tie-break. Thiem, who had a problem with cramps and could barely walk between exchanges, won 8: 6.
Thiem managed to win the US Open final from 0: 2 as the first player in 71 years. In 1949, the American Pancho Gonzalez demonstrated the same turn.
Thiem succeeded in the grand slam final on the fourth attempt. Last year and the year before last he lost in the fight for the title at the clay Roland Garros and this year at the Australian Open. After Thomas Muster, King of Paris in 1995, he is the second Austrian Grand Slam champion.
The tournament in New York was played due to coronavirus without fans. That is why the defender of the title, the Spaniard Rafael Nadal, did not come. The favorite this year was the undefeated Serb Novak Djokovic, but he was disqualified in the round of 16 after the line judge was shot.
