Dominic Thiem, former champion of the United States Open, fell this Tuesday 7-6(6) and 6-2 against the Italian Luciano Darderi at the Vienna Open, in what was the 31-year-old Austrian’s last professional match.
The former world number three was emotional after his first round defeat in his own country and received a standing ovation from the public at the Stadthalle stadium in the Austrian capital.
Thiem has struggled to regain the form that took him to the Flushing Meadows title in 2020 and announced he would retire this season, having struggled with a wrist injury in recent years.
The tennis player had said that this season was his last opportunity to return to playing at the level he expected of himself and climb positions in the rankings, before announcing his retirement in May.
The Austrian had an impressive career. He won 17 singles titles and reached consecutive Roland Garros finals in 2018 and 2019, eliminating Serbian great Novak Djokovic before losing to Spaniard Rafael Nadal on both occasions.
Thiem also beat Nadal, such as in the quarterfinals of the 2020 Australian Open, where he reached the final before losing to Djokovic.
