Dear friends of documentary films,
In October we will present you two feature film debuts in which the deepest rifts run through families.

We start on 08.10.2024 with HAO ARE YOU by Dieu Hao Do. His first full-length documentary is about his own family, which, like 1.5 million other Vietnamese, had to leave their homeland in 1975. The fall of Saigon and the communist takeover causes the family to break up. Scattered all over the world, they break off contact. Now Dieu Hao Do is trying to bring the siblings back together. Can the traumas we have suffered still be overcome together?

It continues on 22.10.2024 with THE OTHER SIDE OF THE RIVER by Antonia Kilian. In her first feature film she accompanies Hala, a young woman from northern Syria. At the age of 19, she ran away from home to avoid an arranged marriage with an IS officer. Hala joins a Kurdish women’s defense unit and from then on aims to free her younger sisters from the patriarchal constraints of their family. Antonia Kilian describes the determined path and the literally militant feminism of Hala and her colleagues in a moving and stirring way.
