Chelsea just emerged as champion Club World Cup 2021. Chelsea centre-back Thiago Silva was named the best player of the tournament.
The Blues are entitled to lift the Club World Cup trophy after silencing Palmeiras 2-1 in the final which lasted until extra time. Located in Abu Dhabi, Saturday (12/2/2022), Chelsea and Palmeiras played equally strong until normal time after Romelu Lukaku’s opener was answered by Raphael Veiga’s goal from the penalty spot.
Kai Havertz appears as a hero Chelsea having converted a late penalty, following Luan Garcia’s hand ball. The German midfielder netted after sending the Weverton goalkeeper tumbling in the wrong direction.
Afterwards, FIFA announced that Thiago Silva lined up as man of the match as well as the best player in the tournament. Even though the 37-year-old centre-back took home the Golden Ball award, Palmeiras was awarded a penalty after handball in the second half.
“I’m very happy,” said Thiago Silva after the match on the official FIFA website. “I’ve waited 37 years for this moment. I’ve made great sacrifices to achieve this. It’s very, very difficult to become a world champion.”
“I’m so happy. We’re all happy. It was a tough game. In a final like this the little details make the difference. They got a penalty by handball, we got a penalty by handball.”
