TIJUANA.- For Dr. Horacio Ortega Clavero, director of the Prado Fertility Center, the reopening of the border for non-essential travel could cause an increase in the number of patients seeking fertility treatments in Tijuana.
The foregoing, after a considerable decrease in requests in this regard as a result of the closure of the border due to the fear of not being able to return to the neighboring country.
“At first, many people who work in the United States and live in Mexico or who live in southern California continued to come, however at a certain point a fear was generated that if they came they would not be able to return to the neighboring country and there began to be those changes, I think that right now with the opening that becomes a little more general, people will start to come with more confidence ”, he explained.
The director of the Fertility Center of the Prado, clarified that despite the advances in the issue of vaccination on both sides of the border, the Fertility Center has never relaxed health security measures, ensuring infection-free and safe spaces for patients.
“From the beginning when we restart work we have always worked with all the precautions, we began with the isolation between the doctor and the patient, the use of face masks preferably 95 and of medical grade, avoiding crowds and the general measures already known as hand washing and use of gel and in case of being a patient who will enter treatment, we ask them for a negative test for covid-19 ”, he reported.

The specialist recalled that the main treatments offered range from ovulation induction, ovulation induction with artificial insemination and in vitro fertilization, procedures that are becoming more and more common.
“It is perhaps something more routine and more accessible to people, there is more diffusion and people resort more to studying and seeing why they cannot create babies, the success rates are closely linked to the age of the woman, where they are older Percentages of pregnancies are in women under 35 years of age, however it does not mean that the rest of that age do not get pregnant or have no possibilities ”, he emphasized.
In addition, he commented that there are alternatives such as ovulation induction in which, through medications, ultrasound is followed and once the woman ovulates, they have intercourse in order to conceive, another is ovulation induction with artificial insemination. And in that case it is to give medicine so that the ovaries produce eggs and once that woman is going to ovulate, the husband is scheduled to take a sample, concentrate and this puts the sperm inside the uterus, that is artificial insemination.
“If we go to more technology, we have in vitro fertilization, that is in the event that the tubes are obstructed or other treatments have failed,” Ortega Clavero clarified.
The doctor recognized that Tijuana has always been a prototype of a city for other entities in the interior of the country, since there are many highly trained people here and with many years offering services to people from southern California, Nevada and the hope is that these people will resort more to the city, taking into account that restaurants, shops, hotels and everything we have in the city benefit from medical tourism, “it is an important point and we believe that it has to improve and hopefully we return to the levels we had. in 2019 ”.
