They will start enforcing the law that reduces speed

The city’s Department of Transportation is starting to lower speed limits in several areas, thanks to the state’s Sammy’s Law, signed into law by Governor Hochul in May.

The law was named in honor of Sammy Cohen Eckstein, a 12-year-old boy who lost his life after being hit by a car in Brooklyn.

And the reduction in the number of miles per hour seeks to reduce roadkill and fatal road accidents caused by excessive speed.

The first section where the measure was implemented was on Prospect Park West Street, where Sammy lost his life in 2013.

Speeds on 250 streets are expected to be reduced by the end of 2025.

Governor Hochul announces major investments in transit expansion and road safety as part of the Fiscal Year 2025 Budget Agreement.

“This budget will advance transformative infrastructure projects that will change the way New Yorkers get around and engage in tax and tax compliance to ensure that all pay a person who uses our public infrastructure their fair share,” said Hochul.

Sammy’s Law, named after Sammy Cohen Eckstein, a 12-year-old boy who died when he was hit by a car in 2013.

This law will allow New York City to reduce its speed limit to 20 miles per hour, greatly reducing the risk of death or life-threatening injuries in a crash.

“We do this where there are more people, where there are students, where there are elderly people, and we do it with the aim of ensuring that the Transport Department, together with the Police Department, are here we have Chief Rivera, y’all. the agencies are committed to continuing to do what is necessary to make New York a place that continues to be a national example,” said Transportation Commissioner Ydanis Rodríguez.

The department will also create regional reduced speed zones in the five cities, where the speed limit will be 20 miles per hour. The first will be implemented in Manhattan, south of Canal Street.
