Next year, the Mexico City International Airport (AICM) will renovate its facilities to give it a new image before the 2026 FIFA World Cup, as Mexico is one of three venues, which are expected to attract 6 million of tourists from all over the world.
In interview with The Day, Rear Admiral José Ramón Rivera Parga, director of the air terminal, said that the aim is to modernize the facades, clinics, waiting rooms and baggage and immigration belt areas of the two terminals, integrating natural elements, such as plants and water, with their architectural structure and a new range of colors in its finishes, in line with cultural designs and inspired by the country’s identity, which consolidate it as a functional, modern, efficient and sustainable infrastructure.
The idea is to theme the spaces with a representative object of Mexico City and the 32 states, but not only that: also, promote proposals that explore the union between nature, with plants and green walls, water (fountains, waterfalls) , glass, lighting and use of conscious materials
among other recommendations on the quality of life of users, in order to establish a new concept that positively impacts the airport, meeting the modernization requirements and proposing the new image.
Rivera Parga pointed out that the AICM is the hub (concentrator) on a national scale, since it is the main gateway to the country’s capital for national and foreign visitors, as well as a strategic point for business and connectivity with the rest of the world. This is due to its location, the economy around the airport, and there is still a lot to offer the passenger.
.
Likewise, he points out, it is the main reference on which the National Airport System is constituted; it concentrates the largest number of passengers and operations; Furthermore, it has the mission of providing, operating and managing safe, efficient, profitable and quality airport, complementary and commercial services, which satisfy the needs of users, contributing to national development.
He recalled that one of the 100 commitments of President Claudia Sheinbaum was the expansion of the airports of Tamuín, San Luis Potosí; Tepic, Nayarit; Lázaro Cárdenas, Michoacán, and Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, as well as the remodeling of the capital terminal. In his commitment 87 he established to restructure the airport
but not only that, he even pointed out that the Navy proposed to launch the architectural conceptualization contest for terminals 1 and 2, which was endorsed by the president.
The President also cares about the image we give abroad, and that is why she gave the instruction for airport remodeling. He ordered us to keep it in the best conditions, as our passengers deserve.
Today closes the call that the AICM published last October, aimed at architecture students, architects, designers and urban planners, as well as offices, workshops and architectural associations, to submit their proposals for the conceptualization of the AICM. The winner per category will be awarded a grant of 100 thousand pesos.
