“What is happening now in northern Gaza is a genocide within a genocide,” Palestinian Ambassador Majed Bamya, the deputy permanent observer at the UN, wrote to X.
All observers describe the situation in the northern part of the Gaza Strip as desperate. The Jabalia refugee camp, north of Gaza City is completely surrounded, cut off from all humanitarian aid and is constantly bombarded by the Israeli army.
At least 200 people have been killed since Israeli operations began earlier this month. One of the most horrific images of recent months was on Sunday the shelling of refugee tents that had taken refuge in the courtyard of Al-Aqsa hospital. In the video below, people are seen being burned alive, including children.

Israel says its actions in Jabalia are aimed at “stopping Hamas from rebuilding”. It also says it aims to root out the armed Palestinian resistance entirely in the north.
“Many of the victims are children and women and they arrive at the hospital either in pieces or covered in blood,” an Al Jazeera reporter said.
According to media correspondents and Doctors Without Borders, Israeli snipers are killing people trying to escape – despite evacuation orders.
Tens of thousands of families remain besieged in the Jabalia camp, while the UN aid agency UNRWA estimates that around 400,000 people in total are trapped in the north.
Gideon Levy, a columnist for the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, told Al Jazeera that the Israeli government’s goal appears to be ethnic cleansing of northern Gaza by expelling all Palestinians.
“Israel itself has stated that, basically, Hamas as a military force is completely crushed. So why does it continue? It continues because Israel would like to see northern Gaza empty of all its Palestinian inhabitants,” he added.
Israel withdrew from Gaza in 2005, but has kept it under a land, air and sea blockade since 2007. Despite the recent invasion and more than 42,000 dead Palestinians, Israel has repeatedly said it does not want to retake Gaza.
