More than 100 members of the Bundestag (the lower house of the German parliament) supported a campaign to ban the far-right party “Alternative for Germany” (Alternative for Germany) (AzG), reports Marco Vanderwitz – MP from Christian Democratic Union (CDU), DPA reported, BTA reported.
Vanderwitz said he received the support of 113 MPs from various political parties in the lower house of parliament with 733 seats. They are trying to push a resolution through the Bundestag to ban the AzG and they want the Constitutional Court to rule if the far-right party does actions that goes against the basic law.
Germany’s domestic intelligence has included the AzG in the list of organizations suspected of right-wing terrorist activities. However, only the Bundestag, the Bundesrat (upper house of the German parliament) or the federal government can take action to ban a political party.
When asked if lawmakers would be able to debate the proposal before the election, scheduled for February 23, Vanderwitz said there would be a debate before the end of the current legislative period. However, according to him, it is not clear whether the proposal will be voted on.
