Myrna Tinoco and Luz Mercado enjoy the good weather walking along 34th Avenue in Jackson Heights, which is part of the Open Streets program.
Both neighbors are members of a group that has asked to add more green areas to this initiative.
“We have enjoyed this and I want it to continue, and I want it to be more hours, to be 24 hours a day, 7 days a week,” Mercado explained.
Myrna and Luz are part of ‘Amigos del Parque Lineal on Avenida 34’, a group of neighbors who have come together to ask for this avenue to be remodeled creating more green spaces. Something that according to them, is necessary in Queens.
They ensure that these changes will not limit access to emergency and delivery vehicles, or prevent vehicles from entering their garages.
They also argue that the avenue will remain safe for neighborhood schools such as pedestrians, cyclists and motorists. The petition has already gathered around 1,500 signatures.
“Most of us live in subdivided houses, there are many of us with little access to open space, so this is part of the solution. What it does is remedy the faults we live in in this Jackson Heights community, “added Tinoco.
