Dr. Gloria Orué, head of Adult Kidney Transplants at the IPS, reflected on the National Transplant Day that is remembered on July 9 and spoke of the importance of having donors to prolong the life of another person.
Today there are about 250 patients on the waiting list for transplant: About 170 for corneas, then about 60 for kidneys, 10 for heart and 5 for liver, among others.
Factors considered in addition to compatibility are the size of the organ and the age of the recipients. He indicated that more awareness campaign is needed to get the message across.
“Deciding to donate organs is a test of love,” he summarized.
