That the President instructs the Minister of Finance and the president of Banco Estado to study the possibility of forgiveness of mortgage debts of 500 UF or less, is the objective of resolution 732, approved by the Chamber, with 71 votes in favor, 40 against and 17 abstentions.
The measure seeks to alleviate the lives of middle-class people who are in financial stress as a result of high inflation and the country’s economic situation.
In this regard, the text refers to the increase in people’s indebtedness in recent years, which has doubled in the last decade. Within this framework, legislators pay attention to the mortgage field.
For this, they provide data from the Commission for the Financial Market (CMF). Thus, it is highlighted that, as of June 2022, 22% of debtors have mortgage debt. Said charge represents 73% of the stock of the total debt of individuals with banks.
For this reason, they maintain that it is urgent that the Government can face these needs and advance in a cancellation of low mortgage debts. Above all, regarding the elderly, retirees and, in general, people with lower and unstable income.
The authors of the resolution are the socialists Jaime Naranjo, Daniel Melo, Emilia Nuyado, Juan Santana, Daniella Cicardini, Marcos Ilabaca, Nelson Venegas, Daniel Manouchehri and Danisa Astudilllo.
